Discovering the Fortizza Reef Tunnels in Sliema, Malta
The Fortizza Reef Tunnels are located along the very popular Sliema sea side promenade and offers one of Malta’s most exciting and accessible shore dives. This dive has a mixture of underwater swim-throughs, rocky reef formations, caverns , caves and abundant marine life. This dive site has become a favourite for both beginner and experienced divers looking to explore Malta’s vibrant underwater world close to the city.
The dive site takes its name from the historic Fortizza building overlooking the coastline which is a fortress around since the 1800’s. Entry is usually made from the rocky shoreline near Fond Ghadir bay also known as Ferro Bay, by the public toilets area by the rocky beach. It’s an easy shore entry that descends gradually onto a beautiful reef system filled with cracks, arches, and small underwater tunnels. Depths generally range between 6 and 18 metres, making the site suitable for a wide variety of certification levels and ideal for relaxed exploration dives.
What makes the Fortizza Reef Tunnels particularly special is the unique underwater topography. Over thousands of years, natural erosion has created narrow passages and cavern-like tunnels through the limestone reef. Sunlight filters through openings in the rock, creating dramatic beams of light and excellent opportunities for underwater photography. While the tunnels are not large cave systems, they provide an exciting sense of adventure and are perfect for divers wanting to experience overhead environments in a safe and controlled setting.
The reef is also home to a surprising variety of Mediterranean marine life. Divers frequently encounter octopus, moray eels, scorpionfish, sea bream, damselfish, cuttlefish, and colourful nudibranchs hidden among the rocks and sea grass. The area is also full of Posidonia meadows harbouring over 300 species of marine life. Night dives at Fortizza are especially popular, as many nocturnal creatures emerge after sunset.
Another advantage of the Fortizza Reef Tunnels is their convenient location. Situated in the heart of Sliema, the site is easily accessible and often used for training dives, refreshers, and relaxed guided dives. Calm conditions and excellent visibility during much of the year make it an enjoyable experience for divers of all levels. One must pay careful attention to strong NE and SE swells as they can get extremely dangerous here.
For anyone visiting Malta, the Fortizza Reef Tunnels offer the perfect combination of accessibility, marine life, and underwater adventure right beside one of the island’s busiest coastal towns.
